Noise can come into your home in different forms. It could be noise from cars honking in traffic, aircraft, railways, construction sites and what have you.
These noises can get so loud that they disturb your peace and interrupt your concentration. Too much noise causes less productivity because you won’t be able to think properly. Depending on how loud the noise is, it could be detrimental to health.
A patient with high blood pressure will even suffer more in environments where there is too much noise. Sudden loud noises may cause an increase in their blood pressure and that may be the end for some.
That’s why soundproofing your windows is very important. You will not only be reducing the noise in your home, you might as well be saving lives.
The windows may seem like the smallest opening in your house, but it’s the biggest opening for noise to enter your home.
Four Ways to Soundproof A Window
Check out ways by which you can soundproof your windows and reduces external noise from entering your room:
- Seal Any Gaps Around the Window
The first step to take is to cover all gaps surrounding your window. Sometimes, during construction, little gaps can be left between the window frames and the wall.
You can seal these gaps with acoustic caulk(sealant) or weather-stripping sealers.
When you seal these gaps, the noise that usually enters your room is reduced.
- Create a Barrier Before the Window
Another step is to set a barrier between your house and where the noise generates from. Setting up barriers can be very effective and they’re not difficult to do.
You can set up natural barriers by planting shrubs or you could set up an artificial one like a fence. This is not a permanent solution to reduce noise in your home, however, the barrier will reduce the volume of noise entering through your windows.
- Acoustic Curtains/Blinds
This step takes care of the interior space. Acoustic curtains or blinds are just like normal curtains however this one helps to reduce noise from outside sources.
They are made from acoustic fabrics and they are usually available in different colours which makes them a good fit for the interior of your home. They not only reduce noise but also the aesthetics of your home and effectively control the influx of light. When you use acoustic curtains/blinds for your bedroom windows, you get relief from the noise and unwanted light.
Lastly, acoustic curtains/blinds are more energy-efficient compared to normal standard curtains majorly because of their insulating features.
- Double And Triple Glazed Window Panes
This is the most expensive and effective way to soundproof your windows. Try replacing your existing window panes with double or triple-glazed ones.
If your window has just a single pane, then you’ll continually suffer noise from outside. However, by adding double pane windows, external noise will reduce. And if the double panes are not giving you your desired effect, you can consider triple-glazing.
Additionally, double or triple-glazed windows help to cool the room during summer and warm it during winter.
